Using Veeam FastSCP to Copy Virtualmin Web Site Backups

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

Makes it easy to schedule backups in a number of ways. Even though Virtualmin is capable of sending backup data remotely using either FTP or SCP, I have decided instead to use the amazing free Veeam FastSCP to copy backup data to an external drive connected via firewire. Having it done this way helps cut down bandwith usage. Veeam was primarily designed to copy VMware ESX server bulk files in an extremely fast way.

This is how I went about installing and setting up Veeam FastSCP on my Windows XP. This Windows XP computer is also in the same subnet as the Web server. I have an external 1 TB drive connected to the XP machine using firewire. I get 2 MB/s copy speed with the current hardware currently in use.

I had to first add my Linux web server into the control panel by clicking add server then next.

Set the SSH settings without using the option to elevate to root. I had to enter a different SSH port to connect by clicking on the advanced tab since I have changed this at my web server. Clicking next will now have Veeam attempt to make the connection.

When the connection succeeds I am now able to expand my Linux server.

At this point I can now create a backup schedule by clicking Scheduled Copy. Create a name for the scheduled copy then choosing the source computer to copy from | Click Add to navigate to the directory at the Linux server where the backups are stored | then click next.

Then choosing the drive where my external hard drive is connected to.

This is what I like about Veeam FastSCP I am able to setup an automated backup schedule!

Then click finish either starting the job now or just leaving it to start based on schedule.

Going into the Jobs I can manually start a backup schedule. I needed to hit refresh to see if the job did actually start.

Going to Tools | Options I was able to set the settings for e-mail notification each time a scheduled copy succeeded or fail.

Another great free tool which allows me to have another copy of my web server data backups stored in a different location. Using Veeam FastSCP together with Trilead VM Explorer I can have peace of mind knowing I have a solid disaster recovery setup.
