Managing a Linux server does not always have to be done through vi or other text editors but could also be done using a web interface. Using an open source tool called Webmin I am now able to manage my favorite operating system using a web interface! Webmin offers an incredible amount of tasks which can be done using any of the popular web browsers. These are my steps installing webmin on my Debian Etch server.

Run Your Own Free Enterprise Mail Server

During an economic down turn, why spend thousands of dollars buying commercial mailserver software or even pay monthly/annual fees for e-mail service? When you could use Open Source software to run your own free mail server. If you already have unused server hardware capable of running Linux or Vmware ESXi, you're a step closer to enjoying significant costs savings! I have successfully ran our e-mail infrastructure for the last nine years using open source software, maybe you could do the same. On the other hand if you're used to having paid tech support to call whenever you encounter problems I'd stick with commercial solutions.

I was searching for a backup solution for my guest virtual machines on my VMware ESXi host. The solution had to be a free solution at the moment since we had a temporary spending freeze on our IT budget. I was fortunate though to have come accross this article covering cool free tools to use for Virtualization. One of the products the author talked about was a free backup solution for ESX server created by Trilead.com called VM Explorer. The free version allows backing up virtual machines on an ESXi host, whereas the paid version allows scheduling backups.

Installing IPCop as a Virtual Machine on VMware ESXi Server

Another piece of the puzzle for my Virtualization project has fit into place. I was able to virtualize my IPCop firewall boxes using a free download of VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 4 server. ESXi is a type 1 hypervisor, which directly communicates with server hardware. This was the primary reason why I decided to use ESXi instead of VMware server.
